WHERE CAN I GO FISHING?
With so many people moving to Nevada in recent years, it’s quite common for folks to drop by the Nevada Department of Wildlife and ask some variation of the question, “Where can I go fishing?” The answer isn’t always as simple as some might believe because there are more than 600 fishable waters across the Silver State.
To help anglers in their search for a fishing destination, NDOW fisheries biologists produced a series of Angler Information Guides covering 79 of Nevada’s most popular waters and made them available on the agency’s website – www.ndow.org. Because the status of any given water can and does often change, these information guides are updated annually.
“Whether a fisherman is new to the state, or a long-time resident, the worksheets are a great resource for learning about the fishing opportunities available in the state. What a lot of people don’t realize is that within four hours of Las Vegas they can get into two dozen different fishable waters,” said Ivy Santee, angler education coordinator for NDOW.
The Angler Information Guides include a brief history of the individual waters along with details about the various species available and the tactics and baits needed to catch them. Readers will also find information on camping along with directions and a simple map. In addition to the guides, anglers can also find information by using three regional Fishable Waters Maps that identify the more than 600 fishable streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs throughout Nevada.
Angler Information Guides can be downloaded or printed from the Internet at www.ndow.org. Fishable Waters maps are available at NDOW’s regional offices in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko or at sub-offices in Henderson, Fallon and Winnemucca.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
