PARTIAL CLOSURE AT PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE

Hunters and birders who visit the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge near Alamo will find a portion of the refuge temporarily closed to public access. The closure will be in effect Sunday through Friday and will extend through the remainder of the waterfowl hunting season. However, the closed area will be open for hunting on Saturdays.

The closure is at the southern end of the refuge and includes that portion of Lower Lake from the island south. Signs identifying the closed area have been placed by refuge personnel.

Merry Maxwell, refuge manager, said the closure is due to a tamarisk removal project that must be accomplished before water levels are brought up with water that would normally be stored in Upper Lake. Upper Lake is being kept on the low side while engineers test the integrity of the outlet structure on the dam.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
