About NDOW
Employee Awards & Recognition
Several Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) employees, volunteers and even divisions are recognized each year for their contributions in many different fields. The following is a sample of the awards achieved recently.
Mark Warren Honored as NDOW Employee of the Year
Each year Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) employees nominate one of their own to receive the Ted C. Frantz Employee of the Year Award. In 2007 69 NDOW employees – constituting one-third of the agency staff - endorsed Mark Warren, the agency’s staff fisheries biologist, to receive the honor. The award recognizes extraordinary achievement in management or enhancement of wildlife resources by a department employee that goes above and beyond normal activities.
As a biologist, Mark has coordinated countless projects during his 40-year tenure with the department, including the testing of the state’s fish for heavy metals and accomplishing his career dream of creating a “How to Fish Nevada” guide, which has been extremely popular with the angling public. Under his direction, regional fishable waters maps and species abundance guides have been completed...Read More.

Nevada Biologist Honored as "Recovery Champion"
Jon Sjoberg, fisheries biologist for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), is nearly as rare as the fish species whose populations he is helping to recover. He is among only 16 honorees nationwide to be named a “Recovery Champion” by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in April, 2007.
The Recovery Champion award recognizes outstanding contributions of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees and other individuals and organizations towards efforts aimed at recovering threatened and endangered species in the United States.
“We’re proud and honored to have a biologist of Jon’s caliber working for NDOW who is dedicated to recovering our native fish species,” said Ken Mayer, NDOW’s director. “Jon has the respect of fellow employees, supervisors, and directors of several western states with whom we share waters; the Recovery Champion award raises Jon’s work, and NDOW’s commitment to wildlife conservation, to a national stage where it belongs,” he continued...Read More.

Messman Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
When honored with a lifetime achievement award, people usually experience a broad spectrum of emotions; happiness, pride, or a sense of accomplishment.
However, when Fred Messmann, Nevada Boating Law Administrator, was awarded the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) at its annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky, in September, 2006, he was simply confused.
“I had no idea it was coming. As they began reading the accomplishments of the winner, I thought it sounded awfully familiar.” He said. “I joked with my peers that a lifetime achievement award usually means you’re all done, but I’m just getting warmed up,” said Messmann...Read More.

State Wildlife Department Recognized for Hispanic Outreach Efforts
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) was recognized in July of 2007 for its efforts to take the fishing message to Nevada’s growing Hispanic population and encouraging its members to participate in this traditional outdoor sport. The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) presented NDOW with the Take Me FishingTM Outreach and Education Award during the annual conference of the Association for Conservation Information held in Lenox, Mass. in July.
“This is the type of award that everyone at NDOW can be proud of, and we are very honored. The campaign has helped us gain a better understanding of all of our customers, and to learn new and better ways to encourage fishing in Nevada, “said Kelly Clark, NDOW conservation education chief...Read More.

Baily Wins Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award
Never tell Kevin “CK” Baily that one person can’t make a difference. The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners is honored the Carson City resident for doing just that. Baily has been named the recipient of the Commission’s Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award for his five-year effort to see an urban fishing pond created in Carson City. He received the award during the Wildlife Commission’s May 12, 2007 meeting in Reno.
In 2006, Baily spearheaded efforts to secure funding through the use of Question 1 monies to develop the pond. In order to accomplish his chosen task, Baily worked closely with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and attended meetings of the Carson City Wildlife Advisory Board and the Wildlife Commission...Read More.
